Telemedicine is an essential part of the e-health today. At the core of temedicine systems by MEYTEC is a simple idea, namely to ensure the reliable communication and data exchange (increasingly in real time) between remote medical locations or experts using modern information and communication technologies (ICT).
Telemedicine is not simply a phenomenon of the recent years or even decades. In this context, the names of Einthoven and Krupp are often mentioned for their work in the early 20th Century. Both tried to initiate diagnostic procedures via the existing phone lines. Gradually, the networking of the remote medical locations and specialists were established. For example, the Canadian Jutras connected two hospitals via a teleradiology system in 1959.
With the modern information and communication technologies, it is possible now to provide the x-rays, CT-scans, MRI-pictures, lab results, EKG and counting, in a very good quality, interacting with experts around the world to exchange ideas in real time.
Telemedicine is the elektronic interchange or dispatching of medical data like texts data, tables, medical results, pictures, video and audio data via long distances to enable the diagnostical and therapeutical interaction of medical professionals. Nowdays there are many definitions of telemedicine. It is best defined as follows:
Telemedicine or telemedicine products are both medical services and services from the medical environment. Their instruments are the modern safety-related ICT-tools for audiovisual telecommunication (e.g. for providing training and further education measures), data exchange, diagnostic, therapy or monitoring to bridge temporally and spatial distances and to fill the gap of the modern health care systems. According to this definition, telemedicine solutions are not a substitute for the conventional doctor-patient-relationship, but they are complimentary to each other and they contribute together for the improvement of the quality-performance ratio and overall the medical supply system.
